In this edition of our Meet the Band series, we’re shining the spotlight on Bourbon Legend’s violinist, Megan Rae, a passionate musician, educator, and all-around original.
From Pittsburgh to Bourbon Legend
Megan grew up in Pittsburgh, where her love for music took root thanks to a unique incentive: free tickets to musicals at the Benedum Center for straight-A students. That early exposure sparked a deep appreciation for Broadway and classical music. Over time, her tastes evolved to include post-hardcore, an unexpected twist that reflects her openness to a wide range of sounds. That eclectic background brings a unique texture to Bourbon Legend’s sound.
Why the Violin? Blame Larry Fine
While most kids explore a range of instruments, Megan had only one in mind. Inspired by Larry Fine from The Three Stooges, she set her sights on the violin in third grade and never looked back. No one could talk her out of it. Today, her commitment goes beyond performance. Megan teaches, plays, and advocates for music education, working behind the scenes to ensure the next generation has access to the same opportunities. As she puts it, “Music education matters and we have to support it.”
Left Foot Favorites and Other Surprises
One fun fact that might surprise fans: Megan never wears matching socks. The sock she likes more always goes on her left foot. It’s a small quirk, but one that fits perfectly with her one-of-a-kind approach to life and music.
Band vs. Classical Performance
Playing violin in a band is a different experience from classical or solo performance. In an orchestra, she gets to sit and use fewer cords. Solo work, on the other hand, requires memorizing long passages and being the center of attention, which brings a different kind of pressure. In Bourbon Legend, she gets to collaborate, improvise, and contribute to something bigger than any single player.
Names Worth Knowing
Megan’s instruments all have names — because they each carry their own stories:
Cheri – her main violin
Tigger – the one she played in high school
Sonata – her electric five-string
Zita – her acoustic five-string
Each one brings a unique voice to her playing, depending on the venue, mood, and musical moment.
Whether she’s tuning up for an intimate set or stepping into a high-energy show, Megan Rae brings creativity, conviction, and character to every note she plays. Next time you see Bourbon Legend live, take a moment to appreciate the artistry and heart behind the violin.
